Unit 6: Firewalls & VPNs¶
Firewalls and VPNs are important tools used to protect networks and data. They help keep unwanted users out and make internet communication more secure.
Firewalls¶
A firewall is a security tool that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic. It acts like a filter between a trusted network and untrusted traffic, such as the internet.
The main job of a firewall is to:
Allow safe traffic
Block suspicious or unauthorized traffic
You can think of a firewall like a security guard at a building. It checks who is allowed in and who should be stopped.
How Firewalls Help¶
Firewalls help protect systems by:
Blocking unauthorized access
Reducing the risk of attacks
Controlling what traffic can enter or leave a network
Helping protect sensitive information
Basic Firewall Rules¶
Firewalls work based on rules. These rules tell the firewall what traffic should be allowed or blocked.
Examples of firewall rules:
Allow web traffic
Block unknown incoming connections
Allow only certain devices or users to access a system
A security-focused firewall should be configured to block unnecessary traffic and only allow what is needed.
VPNs¶
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure connection between a user and a network over the internet.
A VPN helps protect data by encrypting it, which means turning it into a coded form so others cannot easily read it.
VPNs are commonly used to:
Protect internet activity on public Wi-Fi
Secure remote access to a company network
Keep data private while traveling over the internet
How VPNs Help¶
VPNs improve security by:
Encrypting data
Hiding traffic from unwanted viewers
Making remote connections safer
Helping users securely access internal resources
Simple Example¶
Imagine an employee working from home.
The firewall helps protect the company network by blocking unwanted traffic.
The VPN allows the employee to securely connect to the company network from home.
Together, these tools improve security and help protect important information.
Important Terms¶
- Firewall
A security tool that filters network traffic.
- VPN
A secure connection over the internet.
- Encryption
The process of converting data into a coded form to protect it.
- Traffic
Data moving across a network.
Summary¶
Firewalls control what traffic is allowed or blocked
VPNs create secure and encrypted connections
Firewalls help protect networks from unwanted access
VPNs help keep data private and secure
Both tools are important for network security
